VEDIC ASTROLOGY
LESSON - 1 |
Astrology or
Jyotish is the Jyotir Vidya (the Lore of Light), a Vidya that
can be had only from Jyotishis, because Jyotish is the study
of all facets of the 'lords of light': the Sun, Moon, planets
and stars.
One way in which deep knowledge is imparted to students of Jyotish
is enough observations and interpretations like these, which
are stored in planetary stories and myths. Part of the sadhana
(spiritual path) of Jyotish is to learn these myths and stories
help to integrate Jyotish's tenets into the pupil's consciousness,
which makes the model of reality, which is to learn these myths
and stories help to integrate Jyotish's tenets into the pupil's
consciousness, which makes the model of reality, which is Astrology
become vivid real and solid. There is no doubt that the best
way to learn Astrology it to hear teaching stories at the doubt
that of your guru. But because the tales themselves are also
alive, they can speak softly to those who listen to them mindfully,
even if they have no guru handy to amplify them. |

Celestial
System |
The earth rotates
on its axis once in 24 hours and revolves around the Sun in
365.2422 days. Various planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter
& Saturn also revolve around the Sun. These planets have
satellites revolving round them. Earth has one satellite called
Moon revolving around it. |
|
| The zodiac
is divided into twelve equal parts, for purpose of astrology,
called signs, which are named after the imagery figures, which
the stars from in each division. Since zodiac consists of 3600,
each sign will consist of 3600/12 = 300. The signs are known
as Rashi. |
| Our sages identified
twelve group of stars separated approx. 300 each in the 3600
celestial sphere. Thus we have 12 Rashis. They divided the celestial
sphere in 12 parts because Moon moves around the earth 12 times
during the time earth revolved round the Sun. |

| The zodiac
consists of 3600 divided into 12 signs 300 each. The sign of
zodiac, their Hindu equivalent names, their extent of degrees,
the lordship of each sign and the symbol of each sign is given
in the table. Rahu and Ketu have not been given any lordship
as they are shadowy planets whereas the Sun and the Moon are
the lords of one sign each i.e. Leo and Cancer respectively.
All other planets have dual lordship. |

| Planets |
In Hindu Astrology
nine Planets are considered. Although Sun and Moon are not planets,
they are considered as Planets. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are
also included in the analysis. Rahu and Ketu, the two mathematically
calculated sensitive points, are considered as planets, making
the total number of planets to be twelve. These are as follows: |
