Indian Astrology is in fact a science. But
it is an inseparable aspect of Hinduism;
every true Hindu has to accept Indian
astrology. If he denies astrology and
yet accepts Hinduism, he will be like
one swearing on Bhagavad Gita and yet
denouncing the concept of Chaturvarnya.
Ancient Hindus have given us many sciences
and Indian Astrology is one of them. In
Hinduism the secular and the non-secular
(religions) are the two sides of the same
coin.
Indian
Astrology from the earliest times
has been studied in India as a science
with its ancestry in Hindu religion and
Indian Astrology has a goal in spiritual
realisation of Highest Reality.
Indian
Astrology has its roots in Indian
Astronomy, which in its turn is imbedded
in the Vedic culture and thought. Though
the ancient people of the Vedic times
observed many an astronomical phenomenon
carefully, minutely and accurately, the
compilation Indian Astrology has been
handed over to Geometry and Physics. Indian
Astrology was pre-occupied with discussions
on the nature of Space, Time and Causality.
For manifold reasons, the Upanishadic
thinkers arrived at the formidable conclusion
that Indian Astrology have an empirical
validity and hence are relatively real.
Indian
Astrology was taken up by many
sages like Parashara, Garga and Agastya.
Parashara is the first system-builder
in Indian Astrology. His Hora Sastra,
though we now possess only a summary of
it, is an epoch-making work. The allotment
of the planets to the signs of the Zodiac
has unique features in Indian Astrology.
This is the first greatest contribution
to Indian Astrology to the study of the
planets in relation to the stars. This
is the basis for all types of predictive
astrology and for the development of Astronomy
and physics as well.
