This is not the first case a student taking his or her life due to failure. It is therefore important for both parents and children to aware of the pressure that comes with appearing for an examination and being able to cope with it in a healthy manner. |

The suicide of a Class X student from the top of the CBSE building has brought home once again that exam stress is becoming the number one cause of suicides in the country today. Data collected by Snehi, an NGO, of 550 suicides over the past 10 years throws up the starting fact that almost 85% of the suicides was by school or college students. |
At least a youngster in the age group of 12-25 years commits suicide every week, states Delhi Police records. And in over 75% of the cases, examination stress acts as the trigger. |
Going by statistics available with the various help lines, the maximum number of distress calls is received during pre-and post exam days. And in most cases, it is the fear of social rejection and pressure of putting up with expectations of parents, teachers and peer that prompt students to take the extreme step. |
If you are a parent |

Giving the message to your child that failure is an important part of life is very important. Where nobody likes to fail, it’s the most valuable learning tool any of us will experience. You could teach your child that failures are stepping stones to success. Falling short on a goal doesn’t mean falling short as a person. |

Recognise your child’s limitations and understand that your child can’t be perfect; in fact, no one is. Also don’t set very stiff and unachievable targets for them. Have reasonable expectations for your children. Help them set reachable goals so they can achieve success. |
Tips for Slow Learner |
If your child is not able to cope with other children in any way, and is a slow learner, you need special skills to deal with him. It is very demanding, extracting and challenging situation which has to be faced courageously and with great patience. Only you can help your child the best. |
Every child is born with a personality of his/her own. Parents need to understand that every child remains a unique individual with a lot of hidden talent and capabilities that can flourish over a period of time. First recognise that talent, second help him/her bring it out and third, wait and watch with patience flourishing this talent onto greater heights. |

• Avoid comparisons at home or outside totally. |
• Your child may score a low IQ but he/she may be superb with machines and tools. |
• Slow learners are not ‘slow’ in everything they do; on the contrary, they are much faster than other in certain other areas. Try to identify it. |
