The word ‘Ashwagandha’ literally means the smell of a horse. It’s fresh roots smell like a horse and it augments sexual vitality and infuses vigour like that of a horse, hence the name. Bhava Mishra mentions it as one of the prime important plant used as rasayana- a rejuvenator and vajikara an aphrodisiac. Charaka has praised it as one of the best rasayana to mamsa dhatu – meaning an anabolic to muscle tissue. It is a middle-sized, erect shrub, growing upto 1.5 metres tall. The stems and branches are covered with minute star-shaped hairs. The hairy leaves upto 10 cm. long, flowers pale green in clusters. The roots are collected in the winter season.

Ashwagandha is extremely useful as a rejuvenative and general tonic, in individuals who inspite of good appetite and other sound conditions of health fail to put on weight and remain lean and thin. Ashwagandha stimulates the dhatvagni and also facilitates the nourishment of dhatus (tissues) especially, of rasa, mamsa and shukra dhatus. Hence, it is beneficial to children who fail to thrive, in general debility, convalescence in tuberculosis and in sexual debility. It also imparts mild sedative action, hence useful to alleviate the mental stress and strain. As it is the best all-round mind-body tonic, will be of great benefit for people who overwork under mental stress. Ashwagandharishta is the famous wine preparation, commonly used for this purpose. |

Medicated oil of Ashwagandha helps wound healing.

The paste of its leaves and roots is applied to relieve the pain and swelling.

In combination with kushtha, bala, jivanti, apamarga, tila etc, paste is used to rub the body. It imparts colour, gloss and strength to the skin. |
