Guggulu is one of the best herb useful in treating Vata diseases. Commonly, the term ‘Guggulu’ is used for denoting both, the plant as well as its gum, oleoresin. In Sanskrit, ‘Guggulu’ means that which protects against disease. It’s synonym ‘Palankasha’ means one which reduces the flesh (pala-flesh and kash-reduce). Since ancient times Guggulu is well-known for its proerty to reduce the excessive body fats in obesity. Elaborate studies on Guggulu, during last two decades, show that it is a potent lipid modulator. Guggulu, during last two decades, show that it is a potent lipid modulator. Guggulu reduces the raised serum cholesterol, triglycerides and has a virtue to increases the serum HDL-cholesterol.

It is a small tree, usually a stunted thorny bush, 1-5 to 2 metres high. The leaves are alternate, crowded towards the ends of short branchlets. The flowers are small, reddish and fruit a drupe. The gum secreted through its bark in summer, is collected in winter, when solid. |

Ayurvedic texts mention that fresh guggulu ( nava guggulu ) is useful in the treatment of debility, whereas old one ( purana guggulu ) is beneficial to reduce body fats in obesity. There are more than 30-40 formulations of Guggulu , used by Ayurvedic physicians to treat various ailments. Guggulu is the potent drug for Vata diseases like arthritis, spondylosis, rheumatoid arthritis, paralysis, facial palsy etc. It is highly esteemed drug for obesity as it reduces selectively excessive body fats and reduces the body weight, serum lipids etc. One should avoid alcohol; excessive exposure to sun and excessive during Guggulu treatment. Pitta people should sparingly use the Guggulu . |
| External Uses: |
Gargles with Guggulu heal the mouth ulcers.
|
Apply the paste of Guggulu in glandular swelling. It reduces the pain and swelling. |
Plaster of Guggulu applied on fractures, promotes their healing. |
In hoarseness of voice, take equal quantity of Brahmi, Vacha, Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Pippali (Piper longum) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and chew. |
