Meditation
is a state of mind and
consciousness in which there is alertness, dynamism,
dissociation of mind and senses, and total concentration.
It is definitely not a process to block out events or
experiences, which are constantly affecting us. In the
Raja Yoga Sutras the process of meditation has been
divided into eight stages: (i) Yama (self-restraint),
(ii) Niyama (fixed rules), (iii) asana (posture), (iv)
pranayama (breath control), (v) pratyahara (sensory
withdrawal), (vi) dharana (concentration), (vii) dhyana
(meditation) and (viii) Samadhi (transcendental consciousness).

Meditation is not easy.
If you think that closing the eyes and trying to stop the
mind is meditation, then you can try it. But you will not
be successful unless you have developed very strong will power.
Without the power of anashakti, vairagya or non-attachment,
meditation is very difficult to practice. However, unless
and until that happen you will have to work through the practices
systematically, stage by stage.

| Meditation
unleashes immense potential. We gain mastery of the mind by
bringing a halt to his incessant chatter and teaching it to
focus in a concentrated manner. Awareness of thought patterns
helps to give the power to project thoughts to others. Yet one
must be very careful always to send only vibrant, positive,
loving and healing energy. |
Meditation
throws light to understand how the mind operates and thus
is able to begin the growth process. Exactly what techniques
are used depends on the nature of the individual. In Yoga,
there are four main paths. Raja Yoga is the scientific psychological
approach focusing on concentration and meditation. Karma Yoga
is the path of eliminating the ego and attachments through
selfless service. Jnana Yoga is the method by which the intellect
is used to negate bondage to the material world. Bhakti yoga
sublimates the emotions into devotion. |
