Sound Sleep – A Great Healer
Sleep is a great healer and strengthener. Along with other positive lifestyle practices, adequate sleep helps to enhance a fresh, clean, vital and beautiful mind and body. The hours of darkness are the healthiest times to sleep.Sleeping during the day is not advised as it is said to produce toxins
or ama in both the body and the mind. A 10 to 20 minute cat nap can actually be helpful to recharge a busy Vata type person if it is taken in the early afternoon. Longer naps are also sometimes advised in very hot weather between noon and three or four o’clock in the afternoon- in some cultures called “siesta” time.
General Advice for Peaceful Sleep
  • Wash your hands, face, and feet and clean your mouth and teeth before sleeping.
  • Do not eat or drink for two hours before bedtime, especially very spicy or greasy foods. Caffeine not only keeps you awake, but makes sleep more restless. Also, avoid alcoholic beverages before bedtime.
  • Meditate briefly to clear the cares of the day before you close your eyes.
  • Sleep in a quiet, slightly cool, well ventilated space away from smoke or the smell of food.
  • Lay on your right side to promote the most restful sleep. Breathing mostly through your left nostril naturally calms and cools the body.
  • Sleep with your head in the east for the most meditative sleep and pleasant dreams. Sleeping with your head in the west evokes disturbing dreams and restless sleep. Sleeping with your head in the south works with the polarity of the earth to charge and heal the body. Your head in the north can be draining of energy.
  • Exercise during the day helps cleanse the body of adrenalin that builds up due to stress and keeps the body tense and mind overactive.
  • Exercise before bed by gently stretching the spine, neck, and shoulder areas where the most tension accumulates in the day. This helps the whole body to relax.
  • Take a Luke-warm bath. Hot showers and baths stimulate circulation, increasing the heart rate, making it harder to settle down to rest.
  • Wear natural fibres nightclothes and try to use a bed and bed coverings that are also natural. Natural fibres do not interfere with the natural flow of electromagnetic energy in the body, as do man-made fibres.
  • Massage the scalp and bottoms of the feet with warm sesame or brahmi oil.
  • Use a negative ion generator. Negative ions ease the mind, please the senses and relax the body. Negative ions are naturally in high concentration near the ocean, waterfalls and in forests-places associated with relaxation and pleasure. Sleep near a Tulsi (Holy Basil) plant if you can find one. Such practices help to counteract positive ions often found in urban environments.
  • Listen to quiet, calming music.
  • Drink a cup of warm spiced milk in the late evening. Raw cows milk is the best for Vata types so long as they are not lactose intolerant.
  • Never read, watch T.V., and listen to music, write, and even think in bed.
  • To reduce anxiety about going to sleep, develop a routine that works and stick to it. The body loves routine and will learn useful behaviours more quickly if they are done regularly, like a positive ritual.
